Forward Deployed EngineerAn engineer working next to your trade
The forward deployed model sends the engineer to where the problem is, rather than shipping a generic product from head office. They work on your data, inside your constraints, next to the people who will use the tool.
Why this role
A specification describes what we think we know about the work. Three days spent with the users reveal what we did not know: the file that stays open all day, the step everyone skips, the question people ask again because the answer is nowhere.
What it does concretely
- Watch the real work before writing a single line of code
- Build a short first version, put it in the hands of users, correct it
- Connect the tool to the systems already in place, without demanding that everything change
- Leave behind a team able to keep alive what has been built
On the redesign of a field team scheduling tool, watching the work done on the road led to removing rather than adding: twenty three navigation entries brought down to six, three dashboards merged into a single cockpit.
What it is not
This is not fixed price subcontracting behind a frozen specification, nor an audit that produces a report. The engineer delivers software that runs.

Inside your team
A profile joins your team for an agreed period, works on your tools and your data, and passes on what they build as they go.
On a deliverable
The role is mobilised on a project with a defined scope, alongside the other skills required. You receive a deliverable, not a report.
